It was a nice crowd at the ART, and although not sold out, there were more seats than empty, so that was good.
Lucy commented on how blown away she was by the quality of the venue and how great the acoustics are there. Joe had to love that!!
She thanked everyone in attendance for not going to the Greg Brown show at the Aladdin that night (she obviously is a big fan herself) drawing some hearty laughter from the audience.
She was in a happy mood, and plugged her new collaboration with John Gorka and Eliza Gilkyson
RED HORSE, also the title of the new CD, which I bought and got signed after the show. She announced that the three of them
have booked the Aladdin for a show next March or April. AWESOME!! She played her 4 songs from the CD: her own "Scorpion", Eliza's "Sanctuary" (especially great on the piano), "Don't Mind Me" -- the one John Gorka covers of her, and John Gorka's "Blue Chalk". She played some rarities from her early career, like "Don't Mind Me", and some favorites like "Ring of Fire" and "This Is Home". She thankfully kept her cooing over her daughter to a minumium this time, seeming to be aware she has a tendency to go over the line, as in her last few Portland shows! When she said that she taught her daughter to never, ever lie, I said "awesome", and she then she gave me a genuine "thank you" (easy, since I was in the front row)
The highlight of her set, for me, was a great version of Springsteen's "Thunder Road" -- along with a great story about seeing him when she was 15 in l975
and how turning 50 really isn't really as bad as she thought it would be.
After intermission, Tracy took the stage, and she sounded great
and in good spirits. She started out with the great Kate Wolf song "Across the Great Divide", and then the usual song in "the #2 slot", Crocodile Man. Of course there were lots of Dave Carter songs such as "Hard to Make It",
"Shadows of Evangeline", and "Gun Metal Eyes", and lots of interesting stories. The best one went on for about 15 minutes: about how she met Dave #3 (after explaining about Dave #1 & Dave #2 of course) at the Buffalo Gap.
It was quite moving, and it seemed therapeutic and comforting for her to tell us the hardly-ever-been-told story. You could
tell that she still hasn't gotten over the tragic ending of his life that happened way too early. For her encore, she played a phenomenal version of "The Verdant Mile", the song she wrote about his recent passing, in Tigard, OR back in 2003.
Then she called Lucy out to join her for an awesome duet of Lucy's "Cowboy Singer" for the last song of the night. That was the icing on the cake.
They both stuck around afterwards for signings and shmoozing, and in Tracy's case, even hugs :-)
Thanks Joe, for providing a great venue for this great show!
Thanks for posting this Eric! I was hoping folks would occasionally do this on the site. Kudos to you for giving us a report on the show.
