Into the swing of summer - Friday night

Big weekend of music continues Friday  ... the sun will have no choice but to shine ...

Tonight begins three days of the eight annual PDX Pop Now Summer Festival ... 44 all-local bands, two stages, tons of great music! Here's everything you need to know about the festival from Ryan White at the Oregonian.  And here's a set of articles about the festival and bands from Oregon Music News ... This year it will be held at Refuge (SE Yamhill and 2nd) ... music starts tonight at 6 pm and goes all day Saturday and Sunday.  And, it's free and all ages.

I'd recommend kicking off your Friday with Ron Rogers and the Wailing Wind - back for their monthly happy hour gig at the Hawthorne Theater Pub ... 6 pm, no cover  ... See the end of this post for a cool video of their tune Alabama Chrome ... Ron's CD, Country & Eastern, is one of my favorite local releases of the past year.

At Fernhill Park (NE 37th & Ainsworth), it's outdoor free summer tunes with Melao de Cuba ... more fine sounds in a Portland Park ... 6:30 pm, free

Out at the Edgefield Concerts on the Lawn, it's Brooklyn's TV On The Radio and special guests, Menomena ... 6:30 pm, $38

The Northwest String Summit continues at Horning's Hideout ... but there's bluegrass fest competition if you want to head east to Stevenson, WA and the Skamania County Fairgrounds for the Columbia Gorge Bluegrass Festival. Dueling banjos for sure!

A fun and funny band lands in Portland tonight at the Alberta Rose Theatre.  Ansty McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours celebrate the trailer park life (literally and metaphorically) through Ansty's tunes and persona.  This band has gotten some fine reviews and this is their first visit to Portland ... check 'em out!  ... 8 pm, $20 (and minors OK when accompanied by responsible adult) ... see video below of Ansty.

South Carolina's Dangermuffin is back for a NW tour and stop at the Mission Theater.  These guys were impressive last year when Tony Furtado invited them to his residency gig ... they picked up quite the following ... nice to see them back this summer ... The Beautiful Train Wrecks on the bill too ... 8 pm, $10

It's a great night for locals about town (besides PDX Pop Now) ...

Rich Layton & The Troublemakers will keep the dancers happy at the Trails End Saloon with their swampified Gulf Coast sound ... 9 pm, $??

Chris Robley and the Fear of Heights continue their week at Al's Den ... tonight with guest Lara Michell .. 7 pm, no cover

LaRhonda Steele is at Clyde's Prime Rib ... 8:30 pm, no cover

Excellent jazz with the Devin Phillips Quartet at Jimmy Mak's ... 8 pm, $12

The Pete Krebs Trio with lithely swing at the Press Club ... 8:30 pm, no cover

Duffy Bishop will be at Hallibuts (how do you keep that big voice in that little room!) - and when Duffy sings, you never know who will drop by to join her ... 8 pm, no cover

Lincoln Crockett is at Mississippi Pizza ... 9 pm, $8

Kathryn Claire and The My Oh Mys (Ezra Holbrook's band) are at Biddy McGraw's ... 9 pm, no cover

Okay ... make a plan and head on out!  Summer tunes await ...
