Into the swing of summer 3 - Saturday & Sunday

Busy live music weekend continues in Portland with more great choices for ya ...

There's the ongoing festivals that continue through Sunday - PDX Pop Now!, Northwest String Summit, and the Columbia Gorge Bluegrass Festival ...

Saturday
Looking for tunes in the afternoon?  Try Mississippi Studio's BarBar Patio with Kasey Anderson and Peter Miller (4 pm, no cover) ... or head to Music Millennium for a free in-store performance by Portugal. The Man (4 pm) - their new CD, In The Mountain In The Cloud is getting very positive reviews. See then before they head out on an extended tour. Here's an excellent story by Ryan White at the Oregonian about the recording of the new CD.

The Press Club has a dynamic songwriting duo of James Low and Lewi Longmire swapping tunes ... 8:30 pm, no cover

Guitarist James Clem is at the Muddy Rudder ... 8 pm, no cover

The Slow Drags do a CD release and memorial concert for their late front man, Scotland Barr Moritz, at Dante's.  We Will Be Forgotten is the final release by the band - they enlisted the help of a number of Portland vocalists to finish the double-CD set after Moritz's death. This should be a cathartic and celebratory release ... 9:30 pm, $8

An East LA band I mentioned in Thursday's post - Tremoloco - will be at Duffs ... 9:30 pm, $10

Sunday
Did you know that very Sunday you can enjoy Reggie Houston with your mid-morning brunch at EaT (3808 N. Williams) from 11am - 2 pm, or with dinner at Cannon's (5410 NE 33rd Ave) at 5 pm? ... Two different trios, but both with Reggie's engaging sax and vocals, New Orleans charm, and deep musical knowledge (which he generously shares) ... no cover at either, but feed yourself and the tip jar.

Another great choice for music on a summer's afternoon, is to head over to Mississippi Studios for the BarBar summer patio sessions every Saturday and Sunday ... this Sunday it's the James Low Western Front (acoustic) and MBilly ... 4 pm, no cover

The sublime vocals and 30's swing of The Stolen Sweets can be heard at Duff's ... 6 pm, $5

Fleet Foxes with special guest Alela Diane will be at Edgefield's Concerts on the Lawn ... 6:30 pm, $38

Probably my favorite live band of the past 25 or so years is Los Lobos, and they'll be at the zoo on Sunday evening.  Can't ever get enough of this amazing band from East LA (with a Portland connection - Steve Berlin lives here) ... They are sharing the bill with Los Lonely Boys - three Texas brothers who can rock ... 7 pm, $26

If you don't catch live music somewhere this weekend, either you're not in town ... or seriously distracted! See ya out and about ...
