Three big shows this week

What excellent choices this week in touring shows ... and two are on Tuesday ...

Want to hear one of the best songwriters around?  One of my favorites, Tom Russell, will be at the Alberta Rose Theatre.  Tom's songs have been covered by countless artists over the past 25 years for a very good reason - he simply writes great songs.  A fine storyteller and compelling performer, he's ably supported by Portland's own Thad Beckman ... 8 pm, $25

This is simple - if you love New Orleans funk, you really shouldn't miss Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue at Roseland.  Ticket demand moved this show from Dante's ... This is going be one monumental butt-shake.  Their CD, the Grammy-nominated Backatown, is one of my favorites recordings of 2010. Troy Andrews is the latest in a long line of fantastic trombone players from New Orleans stretching back to Kid Ory (... probably further) ... plays trumpet, sings too ... Los Amigos Invisibles opens ... 9 pm, $20

Then on Wednesday another poet among songwriters, Rodney Crowell, drops into the Aladdin with a show that will focus on music alternating with readings from his new and critically acclaimed autobiography, Chinaberry Sidewalks.  Highly recommended  ... 8 pm, $22
