My featured show of this evening is the kickoff show of the PDX Jazz Festival's monthly series at Tony Starlight's with Devin Phillips. Devin and his band will be performing John Coltrane's A Love Supreme in its entirety ....
Born and raised in New Orleans, Devin Phillips was an evacuee during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and became a part of the Portland Jazz Festival's "NOLA 2 PDX Project." Devin Phillips is now a permanent fixture on the local scene performing in a multitude of ensembles, including Portland Jazz Festival appearances with Branford Marsalis and Pharoah Sanders. For this special engagement, his homage to Coltrane recognizes his mentor's 84th birthday (September 23) and celebrates the birth of Phillips' newborn son. States Philips, "While we were at the hospital during the birthing process, I had A Love Supreme played repeatedly.
