Friday music ... more choices

Besides the Gulfsongs shows at the Laurelthirst tonight (9 pm - James Low Western Front and Miss Michael Jodell), there are a few notable shows you should know about. But maybe drop by the Laurelthirst before or after if you happen to choose somewhere else. We'd love to see you!

In its beautiful setting under the historic St. Johns Bridge, the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival begins its annual three day run tonight with a blues evening  ... this year it features Linda Hornbuckle at 6 pm and Lloyd Jones at 8 pm. Critically acclaimed singer Karrin Allyson closes the festival on Sunday. See the full schedule here and there's an excellent article about the festival on Oregon Music News. ... admission to all three days is free.

It will be a foot stompin' night at the Alberta Rose Theater with Truckstop Honeymoon, Chris Chandler & Paul Benoit, and Pancake Breakfast ...  8:30 pm, $15

One of Portland’s newest acoustic folk rock quartets, Wendy and the Lost Boys, are playing  from 8-10 at the Hawthorne Theatre Lounge at 39th and Hawthorne ... no cover

The fine duo from Brooklyn, Kaiser Cartel are in Portland tonight at Mississippi Studios. Stephen Ashbrook is also on the bill ... 9 pm, $8

The New Pornographers bring their outstanding power pop songwriting to the Crystal Ballroom ... 9 pm, $25

Quasi and Built To Spill are at the Wonder Ballroom ... 9 pm,  $23

And a heads up for Saturday ... if you're interested in attending a great house concert with the fabulous Rosie Flores, please contact mike@hillcountrywest.com.  Mike's shows focus on bringing Texas artists to Oregon, and I've had great feedback from folks who have attended. $15 for a living room show ... potluck and schmoozing start at 6 pm, music at 7:30..
