Back with some live music options!

The spaces between posts go longer ... hoping to correct that between now and end of the year. Summer's over, the rain will makes its return and even without the outdoor options, there will be plenty of great music choices every week. So let's see what's happening this Octoberfest weekend ...

Maybe you have tickets to the sold out Sturgill Simpson show at the Schnitz or the Janet Jackson show at Moda, but if not ... here are some other musical treats for Friday:

A great early music pick is to head to The Secret Society for Becky Kilgore and the Cowhands. One of the best jazz vocalists does her take on western swing and country ... 6 pm, $6  ... and stay for the later show to catch The Rock Bottom Boys and The Junebugs ... 9 pm, $12

BTW, you can also catch Rebecca Kilgore every Sunday evening in October at Jo Bar on NW 23rd.

It's an evening of soulful blues guitar and storytelling with "the Ambassador of the Blues," internationally acclaimed artist and performer Guy Davis. Concert is at The Hallowed Halls in SE Portland ... 7 pm, $25

The Brothers of The Baladi bring their brand of Middle Eastern/world music to the Fremont Theater ... 8 pm, $5

The UkeLadies are having a CD release party at Mississippi Pizza ... 9 pm, $8

Check out some fine Latin jazz with the Bobby Torres Ensemble at Jack London Revue ... 8 pm, $12

The Rose City Kings are at the Laurelthirst ... 9:30 pm, $8

Back in great form, The Dream Syndicate are in town at the Star Theater ...

Saturday
If you're going to the Widmer Octoberfest at Pioneer Courthouse Square, it will include a concert by Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats ....

Early music? I'd recommend The Buzz Holland 6 featuring Paul Brainard at the Laurelthirst ... 6 pm, no cover

Tracy Grammer returns to Portland for a CD release show at the Alberta Rose. Joining her is long-time musical partner, Jim Henry ... 8 pm, $22

Leyla McCalla will be at The Old Church. Who?
Leyla McCalla is a New York-born Haitian-American living in New Orleans, who sings in French, Haitian Creole and English, and plays cello, tenor banjo and guitar. Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun and Haitian music, as well as by American jazz and folk, her music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty. It vibrates with three centuries of history, yet also feels strikingly fresh, distinctive and contemporary.
I've heard her ... she's very good! Highly recommended ... 7:30 pm, $12

Karen Lovely is at Catfish Lou's doing a show that's a fundraiser for The Pongo Fund ... 9 pm, $5

Colin Hay will be at Revolution Hall ... 8 pm, $40/$52

King Louie and LaRhonda Steele will be at South Fork on NE Fremont ... 8 pm, no cover

Sunday
The Bayou Boys (with the amazing Mark Shark back from touring) do their fine Sunday set at Blackwells in Hollywood. And you never know who might join the party ... 5 pm, no cover

Shawn Colvin is doing a 20th anniversary tour for A Few Small Repairs, the album that brought her widespread attention (and awards). She and her band, with special guests Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, will be at Revolution Hall .... 8 pm, $48

And for your radar ...
