Eilen Jewell - Saturday at The Alberta Rose Theatre

Another show this weekend I'll highly recommend ... Eilen Jewell at the Alberta Rose on Saturday. Her latest CD, Sundown Over Ghost Town, was one of my favorites of 2015.

Feb 27, 2016 at 8:00 PM / Doors at 7:00

$17 Advance | $20 at the Door
Tickets at www.albertarosetheatre.com

Crafting a unique style that mixes poetic ballads with swinging rockers, Eilen Jewell ranks among the best in the Americana genre today. As the reigning "Queen of the Minor Key", Jewell leads a tight quartet who blend influences of surf-noir, early blues, rockabilly, and 1960s era rock and roll. Over the course of a decade, Eilen and her band have toured relentlessly. They have performed for legions of fans from Boston to Boise and Madrid to Melbourne at festivals, theaters, rock clubs and coffeehouses. Eilen's fans marvel at her warmth, unique wit, and onstage humor alongside her beautiful songs and fiery performances.

Eilen and her band tear it up whenever they play the Rose. Don't miss this show!

The Dustbowl Revival at Mississippi Studios on Friday

Hi music lovers ...

I'd like to highly recommend this show tomorrow night at Mississippi Studios ... Some might describe The Dustbowl Revival as the love child of the Preservation Jazz Band and the Grand Ole Opry. I call this rootsy Venice, CA, based band a ton of fun. Check them out ...

The Dustbowl Revival is what you could call an American roots orchestra with eight full-time members — and they play it all, mashing the sounds of traditional American music into a genre-hopping, time-bending dance party that coaxes new fire out of familiar coal. This isn't a throwback band. It's a celebration of the sounds that have kept America moving for more than a century, performed with all the flair of a medicine show and rooted in the sweat and swagger of a juke joint song swap.

With A Lampshade On, the Dustbowl Revival's fourth album, finally shines a light on the band's strength as a live act. They formed in L.A.'s bohemian enclave of Venice Beach in late 2007, the result of a hopeful Craigslist ad posted by bandleader Z. Lupetin, a Midwestern transplant who hoped to join together players in the string band and brass band traditions. Since then, one thing has become clear as the group grows more confident in their abilities: Dustbowl does its best work onstage. They've played dive bars, saloons and theaters, front porches and festivals. To watch them onstage is to take part in an evolving conversation between an orchestra and audience. The horns blast, the fiddle and mandolin swoon, and the howling vocals — which Lupetin shares with Liz Beebe — rattle off stories about preachers, drinkers, lovers, and holy rollers.

Over the last few years, the band has steadily gained recognition while playing festivals and venues across North America and Europe, notably with Lake Street Dive, Trombone Shorty, Rebirth Brass Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Their video for their new single, "Never Had To Go," was was shot with a new friend of the band: the legendary actor Dick Van Dyke. While their previous studio albums had more of an old-time feel, this new album has a more funky, soulful, let-loose flavor.

Might be back ... but definitely here today! Picks for the weekend

Home sick on a Friday (and trying really hard not to pay too much attention to work - it will be there Monday) seems like a good time to write a post. Hmmm, looks like I need to blow some dust off the place. OK, so while I try to clean this up and recover from the crud, here's some musical picks for the weekend ...

The big event around town is the 2016 Portland Jazz Festival that kicked off yesterday. The unifying theme this year is a celebration of what would be John Coltrane's 90th birthday. The big show tonight is Charles Lloyd, but check out the schedule and dip into a great event. As always, fine coverage over at Oregon Music News.

There's a benefit at the Trail's End Saloon tonight for local artist and musician Ward Jene Stroud. Ward has been recovering from a very serious heart attack and many of his music and art friends are getting together tonight to support him.

At Mississippi Studios it's an all ages show with Quasi at 6 pm (their 9 pm show is sold out). BTW, tomorrow MS hosts two sold out shows with comedian Janeane Garofalo.

The Sportin' Lifers are doing happy hour at the Secret Society. Check out the schedule, as there's really fine early and late shows through the weekend.

Speaking of happy hour, Michael Hurley is at the Laurelthirst. And the late show has the Prairie Dogs. And tomorrow night has Redray Frazier for happy hour and a double bill of Ron Rogers & the Wailing Wind and Wilkinson Blades for the later show.

Saturday night has Lloyd Jones and band at Arrivederci Wine Bar as a part of the Jazz Festival. Check out their schedule for more great music. Mostly the jazz heads know about this place, but it's a very cool spot on the way to Oregon City on McLoughlin Blvd.

Speaking of wine bars, Vie de Boheme goes Crime-A-Billy Saturday with The Strange Tones ... mayhem with a French twist.

Every third Saturday, it's the Clinton Street Stomp at the Clinton Theater.

Also on Saturday at the Aladdin it's the 28th annual WinterFolk - a benefit for Sisters of the Road. Excellent show for a great organization.

It's a 20th anniversary celebration at the Alberta Rose for Kerosene Dream, one of the most popular Portland bands in the 90s.

BTW, on Sunday night at ART is what looks like a beautiful combination of images and music with the premiere of Malheur: Seasons of Change with a live soundtrack by cellist Skip vonKuske.

And one more for Sunday is a marvelous house concert from Abbie Weisenbloom with the Andy Statman Duo.

OK, that's plenty to get things going for the weekend. Don't know when I'll be back, so here's a few shows to keep on your radar in the coming weeks:

February 27 - Eilen Jewell at the Alberta Rose
March 2 - Noura Mint Seymali w/ Dusu Mali Band at ART
March 11 - Willy Porter at ART

March 3 - David Lindley at the Aladdin
March 4 - John Hiatt at the Aladdin (sold out)
March 6 - Robyn Hitchcock at the Aladdin
March 4 - John Prine at the Schnitz (nice run of shows True West!)

I know there's more, so feel free to add them via a comment!
