Good weekend for touring acts through Portland

And it was good to see Marychris (xmass) back with a post this week - especially since she mention Dave and Phil Alvin coming to the Aladdin next Thursday ... and Alejandro Escovedo to the Doug Fir on Oct 4. Dave and Al are two of my very favorite songwriters and performers. Speaking of favorites coming up - there's also Joe Ely at the Old Church on Sunday, Sept 27. And one more for this week is vocalist Madeleine Peyroux on Wednesday at the Aladdin.

But for this weekend there are some other outstanding artists touring through town. Tonight at the Aladdin is Karla Bonoff. Though she's best known for writing hit songs for the likes of Linda Ronstadt, she's a fine performer too. (8 pm, $30).

At Mississippi Studios tonight it's the fine rootsy band from Virginia,Carbon Leaf. Distinctive vocals and an indie-rock mix of Appalachian, folk, country, and Celtic sounds. Catch them at 8 pm, $20.

Saturday night there's a couple of great choices with the Louisiana soul of Marc Broussard at the Aladdin with local fave Ashleigh Flynn opening. (8 pm, $22) ... and Cheryl Wheeler with special guest Peter Mulvey at the Alberta Rose. Wheeler is often covered by better known folk and country artists, but is a tremendous live act herself. Add the wry and thoughtful Mulvey to the mix and you have a double-bill of excellent songcraft. Don't miss this one ... (8 pm, $25)

One more for the weekend is Sunday night at Mississippi Studios with the duo Luluc. Lauded by the likes of Lucinda Williams, their latest recording, Passerby has garnered much critical acclaim. Check them out ... 8 pm, $12

Great weekend and coming weeks to catch great songwriting and performance!

Well howdy music fans....

...been awhile...but one thing I know for sure, the Alvin Brothers, Phil and Dave and the Guilty Men will be rocking the Aladdin on the 24th...and best of all, our friends, Dead Rock West will be opening and presenting their homage to the Everly Brothers....Cindy and Frank have that harmony thing down!!
For those who remember....and maybe tried to forget - TuTu Band will be at O'Connor's on Saturday...Captain Beefheart with really bad costumes?...there really is nothing I can compare them to...
Alejandro Escovedo returns to Doug Fir on Oct. 4....one of my all time fave singer songwriters...
OK...Now off to try and move the snoring Rottweiler over just a little bit on the bed...
Later....

Yes, a few recommendations for weekend music!

Been away from this too long ... been posting stuff at Facebook, but blink and you miss the post (and not everyone is there). Soooooo ....

Hope some of you are headed to the Sisters Folk Festival ... should be a great weekend of music in a really delightful place. What's cool is that some of the acts who play the festival also squeeze in a Portland gig. Those include two I highly recommend - the Subdudes tonight at the Alberta Rose and Johnathan Byrd on Monday night at O'Connors. Also on Monday is a festival "after party" at the Alberta Rose and Shinyribs at Mississippi Studios.

It's also the opening of the Tillicum Crossing and the MAX Orange Line on Saturday ... there's a whole bunch of music happening - mostly at SE Clinton/12th station and at both the Milwaukie Downtown and Park Avenue stations. Check the Orange Line celebration schedule for details.

It also time for PICA's annual Time-Based Art Festival with lots of very cool and interesting contemporary visual arts and performance around the city.

A blog I've enjoyed in the past, Dave Knows Portland is publishing regularly again with lots of tips on events around the city. Check out events beyond (but sometimes including) music ...

Looking for Happy hour music?
Tonight the happiness flows at the Hawthorne Theater Pub with Ron Rogers & the Wailing Wind ... 6 pm, no cover

Tomorrow there's Kris Deelane and the Hurt at the Laurelthirst, and Ezra Holbrook and Redray Frazier at Biddy McGraws ... both 6 pm, no cover

Tonight
Brandi Carlile has two shows this weekend at Edgefield. Saturday is sold out, but tickets available for tonight. 6 pm, $43

Lauren Sheehan is at the Muddy Rudder ... 8 pm, no cover ... and she'll be at Artichoke Music on Saturday with John Lilly. Info here.

It's quite a night tonight for Louisiana bands and music in town -
First, it's the return of the Subdudes. The last four years have seen them stop touring, then get back to it with a return to their original lineup with Johnny Ray Allen on bass ... then pausing again when Johnny suddenly passed last summer, but now back on the road. Tommy Malone, John Magnie, Steve Amedee, and Tim Cook are rootsy and soulful with great harmonies playing blues, folk, zydeco, and more (and it's where I'm headed tonight!) ... 8 pm, $30

Over at the Aladdin, it's an excellent younger New Orleans-based band, The Revivalists. I saw them a few years back at Jazz Fest and was impressed by their energy and range - rocking hard but with a roots base and NOLA horns ... 9 pm, $15

At the Lehrer, Cascade Zydeco hosts Curly Taylor and Zydeco Trouble ... 7 pm (dance lesson) / 7:30 show, $15

And at Jimmy Mak's, it's a double bill of the Too Loose Cajun/Zydeco Band and the Mac Potts Band to celebrate Mac's CD release, Crescent City Dreams ... 8 pm, $10

Come on Portland - time to get your Louisiana on!

More Portland-like, it's a great triple-bill of Sassparilla, Casey Neill & the Norway Rats, and Hearts of Oak at the Doug Fir ... 9 pm, $12

A few bigger touring shows over the next few days too ... Mark Knopfler at the Keller on Sunday, Foo Fighers at the Moda Center on Monday, Old 97s at the Wonder Ballroom on Monday, Ben Folds at the Roseland on Tuesday.
