Good weekend for touring acts through Portland

And it was good to see Marychris (xmass) back with a post this week - especially since she mention Dave and Phil Alvin coming to the Aladdin next Thursday ... and Alejandro Escovedo to the Doug Fir on Oct 4. Dave and Al are two of my very favorite songwriters and performers. Speaking of favorites coming up - there's also Joe Ely at the Old Church on Sunday, Sept 27. And one more for this week is vocalist Madeleine Peyroux on Wednesday at the Aladdin.

But for this weekend there are some other outstanding artists touring through town. Tonight at the Aladdin is Karla Bonoff. Though she's best known for writing hit songs for the likes of Linda Ronstadt, she's a fine performer too. (8 pm, $30).

At Mississippi Studios tonight it's the fine rootsy band from Virginia,Carbon Leaf. Distinctive vocals and an indie-rock mix of Appalachian, folk, country, and Celtic sounds. Catch them at 8 pm, $20.

Saturday night there's a couple of great choices with the Louisiana soul of Marc Broussard at the Aladdin with local fave Ashleigh Flynn opening. (8 pm, $22) ... and Cheryl Wheeler with special guest Peter Mulvey at the Alberta Rose. Wheeler is often covered by better known folk and country artists, but is a tremendous live act herself. Add the wry and thoughtful Mulvey to the mix and you have a double-bill of excellent songcraft. Don't miss this one ... (8 pm, $25)

One more for the weekend is Sunday night at Mississippi Studios with the duo Luluc. Lauded by the likes of Lucinda Williams, their latest recording, Passerby has garnered much critical acclaim. Check them out ... 8 pm, $12

Great weekend and coming weeks to catch great songwriting and performance!
