Quickie post for tonight ...
And do use the Portland Live music calendar!
Early music ...
Pete Krebs & His Portland Playboys are at the Secret Society at 6 pm (no cover)
Rebecca Kilgore is at the Analog Cafe & Theater on Hawthorne ... 7 pm
My pick for the night is Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys at Duff's ... Celebrating twenty-five years, fourteen albums & hundreds of thousands of miles. In Sandy's words, "What a dream it’s been." This will be a two night celebration (Saturday too!) with one of the coolest guys in the country-swing/rockabilly business. If you don't know him you should check him out ... if you do, you'll be there! ... 9 pm, $15
The annual Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival starts tonight and runs through Sunday with a slate of acts that bounce back and forth between pop jazz and blues. There'll be plenty of music to dance to, though I've rarely seen a crowd there willing to really shake it (come on you 'Couve winos, what's up with that?). Highlights are the Fabulous Thunderbirds tonight and even more fabulous Marcia Ball tomorrow afternoon. Quality acts all the way through, just very safe ... $30 - $60
More ...
Rich Layton & The Troublemakers will be at Shaker & Vine (formerly Vino Vixens on SE Powell) ... 9pm
The Parson Redheads are at the Laurelthirst ... 9:30 pm
Phil Alvin and the Blasters are in town tonight at Dante's ... 9 pm, $15
This blog will cover my ramblings about upcoming live music in and around Portland and recommendations for getting out to clubs and concerts . . . . and whatever else I feel like blathering about.

Some musical notes...
Tonight, Friday, the 16th, Brewer and Shipley will do an instore at Music Millennium before their show at Alberta Rose, with local lad, Jack McMahon opening ( and where I will be merching Jack's CD..) I used to go see these guys a lot when I lived in Kansas and they were always great!...and so much more than just one toke over the line...
Saturday, my friend, Anny Celsi will be doing another instore at Millennium promoting her new record, "January". Anny is from here, and used to act with Storefront before moving to LA with her then husband, Duane Jarvis. She has kept up her songwriting over the years and her son, Ivan, accompanies her on vocals, keys and trumpet.
Also on Saturday, from 10 AM to 8 PM, the Festival Romani will fill Sellwood Riverfront Park with Gypsy music from around the world. There is a suggested admission fee of $10, but from the line-up well worth it. There will also be an after-party at the Bossanova Ballroom, for more dancing and music.
And a musical theatre note: last weekend to catch "Dex Dixon, Paranormal Detective" at the Funhouse Lounge..music, laughs and cocktails...what's not to love?
