My old Storefront Theatre pal and former Mrs. Duane Jarvis, Anny Celsi is coming to town for a visit from LaLa land in mid August. She is looking for acoustic venues that she could book some dates in or anyone willing to have a house concert, Aug. 15-18. You can check her music out on her FB page and contact her there or contact me @ xmass@comcast.net.
Blues Festival next week - Mavis and Eric Burden are the high points for me. New fave band, Bike Thief plays Doug Fir on July 17...if I don't melt before then...
This blog will cover my ramblings about upcoming live music in and around Portland and recommendations for getting out to clubs and concerts . . . . and whatever else I feel like blathering about.

...and we're off..
Summer music fun begins...I guess with all the house parties, we all missed the secret Weezer show at Silverado last night...but tomorrow night is a can't miss...Lucas Nelson (son of Willie and probably equally as high) and his band, Promise of the Real open for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals at the Crystal...I can't recommend this kid enough...plays like Hendrix...and after that, prepping for my stints at Music Millennium booth at Blues Festival (come down and say Hi) and then Jim's Monday night concerts in Sellwood Riverfront Park...
I might have extra ticket for Lucas Nelson show...contact me Sunday afternoon: xmass@comcast.net

Two House Concerts to Welcome the First Weekend of Summer!
Lot of fine music in town this first weekend of summer, including two great house concert opportunities!
Tonight, it's Yvette Landry at the Historic Plimpton Home (map). Yvette is a versatile musician, songwriter, teacher, and author from Louisiana. She not only fronts her own band, but is an integral part of a number of popular and respected Cajun bands, including Bonsoir, Catin. Yvette will be joined by her good friend, Mary Flower, who'll provide some tasty guitar support. And, there'll be an opening set by San Francisco-based singer/songwriter Meredith Axelrod. Music begins at 8, BYOB, and the suggested donation (all $$ go to the artists) is $15. Here's the Facebook event page.
For more information and directions, contact Joe New at smokinjoemusic@comcast.net or 503-701-5311.

Dear music friends ~
Just a reminder that we have seats available for a stellar show coming up (tomorrow)
Saturday June 22 featuring Billy Strings & Don Julin touring out from Traverse City, Michigan. Billy is a brilliant young guitar picker & singer. Don a venerable creative force on the mandolin.
This is one of those shows breezing through town that you don't want to miss.
(From what I gather so far on FB, they are beloved in Michigan. And their fans are quite anxious to have them back.) They are heading down to David Grisman & Mike Marshall's mandolin symposium in Santa Cruz. So far they, drove straight through from northern Michigan to Idaho - trading off in 'a mere 28hrs'. Where they kicked up some mighty dust at the Weiser, ID music festival.
Wednesday earlier this week, Billy & Don took Bellingham, WA by storm. Reviewer Carey Ross of the Cascadia Weekly says ::
" ...I'm not the first person who has encountered Strings' music and wondered if he made some sort of deal with the devil in order to be so good so young. He can make seemingly any stringed bluegrass instrument—guitar, banjo, mandolin—come alive, picking with such speed and precision it seems to defy possibility. It does Strings a vast injustice to say he's amazing "for his age." Strings is amazing. Period. Full stop. No qualifiers or modifiers." Mary Flower X2
Two opportunities to see the fabulous Mary Flower this week ... in solo performance tonight at Tony Starlight's Supper Club (7:30 pm, $10) and tomorrow at a house concert where she'll be lending a bit of instrumental support to her good friend Yvette Landry.
Mary is a world-class guitarist and performer that we can all too easily take for granted since she lives here in town ... I recommend getting out to see her when she's doing a local show ...Wednesday, June 19, 2013
A few notable shows this week ...
The Aladdin Theater and True West productions has three excellent shows this week.
Tonight is James McMurtry. A great writer and riveting performer, he and his band will rock the Aladdin. And local band with a lot of buzz, Denver, will open ... 8 pm, $20 tickets & info
Tomorrow night, we move to the Crystal Ballroom for the amazing songwriter and vocalist, Patty Griffin. She is a longtime favorite of mine and never disappoints. She's touring to support her wonderful new CD, American Kid ... 8 pm, $38 tickets & info
And then on Friday at the Aladdin, it's the legendary South African trumpeter, producer, composer, and activist, Hugh Masekela ... 8 pm, $35 tickets & info
Three nights, three shows you should consider catching ...

Another fine house concert to check out
As I explore the house concert options around Portland I keep turning up some really wonderful shows that folks are putting together. For instance, tonight (Friday), a series called the Sweetbriar House Concerts will host a performance by Eric Taylor, one of the most respected folk/roots songwriters and performers. This is a great opportunity to hear masterful storyteller and traveling troubadour perform for a small audience in a home setting. You definitely check this out.

Invitation to a house concert on June 21
To music fans on my list or who read Jim's Music Notes ...
I want to invite you to a special house concert that will be happening on Friday, June 21st with Louisiana singer/songwriter Yvette Landry. Excellent performer (and joined by some very special guests) in a beautiful environment ... what better way to spend a Friday evening.I am lending a hand to my friend, songwriter Joe New, who is considering this show might be the start of a house concert series. If so, it will be a great addition to all of the fabulous house concert series going on in and around Portland. If you haven't been to a house concert, it is one of the very best way to experience an authentic connection with the performer, the music, and fellow music lovers. Hope you can join me at this show!
