Roots rock. Electric folk music. American music. There's so many ways to try to describe Dave Alvin. To me he's simply one of the best songwriters and performers who uses a range of folk, blues, country, and rock forms that comes our sounding uniquely his own.
Try not to miss Dave and his band, The Guilty Ones, on Wednesday night at the Aladdin. And if that's not enough, the fine tunesmith Marshall Crenshaw will open ... 8 pm, $25
This blog will cover my ramblings about upcoming live music in and around Portland and recommendations for getting out to clubs and concerts . . . . and whatever else I feel like blathering about.

Just a couple of weekend picks
So, besides the Mysti Krewe of Nimbus Mardi Gras Ball that I've gone on and on about for tomorrow night (BTW, get your tickets here - $25 today, but $30 tomorrow!) what else is happening?
The always entertaining Lloyd Jones will be leading a big funky, bluesy time at Duff's - full band with horns, so you know it's gonna be jumpin' ... 9 pm, $??
Alberta Rose Bluegrass Festival kicks off a weekend of outstanding music from national, regional and local acts at the Alberta Rose Theatre. Check out the lineups for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Three concerts (including a Gospel Brunch on Sunday), workshops, and more. You can purchase a weekend ticket for $60 or purchase separately for each show. Tickets here.
If you like real country music, some of the best purveyors of the classic genre - the duo of James Sasser and Chris Miller - are at the Landmark Saloon (847 SE Division). Believe it or not, I finally made it to this venue last weekend and loved it ... 9 pm, $5
And, if you haven't heard, Pete Krebs, one of the most respected and loved musicians in town has been diagnosed with cancer. The music community is rallying with three benefits in the next month and a fund site at the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Please try to make it to at least one of the benefits or give to the fund:
