Friday night picks

Couple of really good ones tonight ...

My pick show is Tony Furtado, Kenny White, and Dean! at the Alberta Rose. Here's a fine write-up of the show by the Willamette Week's Jeff Rosenberg. Most of us know how good Tony is, but I'd like to say something about Kenny White. I got turned on to him by Tony a couple of years ago when he had Kenny guest at one of his residency shows at The Woods. Totally knocked everyone out with his smart songwriting and killer piano playing. Call him a songwriter's songwriter / musician's musician... which means he should be way better known than he is ... 8 pm, $15

What else?
If I wasn't going to the above show, I'd check out the Landmark Saloon for a cool little combo I caught last year at Pickathon, Petunia and the Vipers. Country, rockabilly, swing ... very fun ... 9 pm, $5

Feelin' blusy?
Joe McMurrian does his monthly happy hour at the Laurelthirst at 6 pm.  And you can catch  Shemekia Copeland tonight at Jimmy Mak's ... 8 pm, $15/$18 ... advance tickets here.

Need some country ...
Texas style at the Hawthorne Theater Pub happy hour with Ron Rogers & the Wailing Wind ... 6 pm, no cover ... or more trad/tribute with Cash'd Out at Mississippi Studios ... 9 pm, $18

Indie NW?
Seattle's The Cave Singers headline the Wonder Ballroom .... 9 pm, $18

BTW, hope you're tuning in to WWOZ in New Orleans for the 2nd weekend of Jazz Fest ... and if you have cable or satellite TV, you can catch some live video broadcasts on AXS TV ... on Comcast, it's channel 798(HD).
