End of July picks ...Saturday

Before a few picks for tonight  ... catch some great music from the Newport Folk Festival today and tomorrow on NPR ... so far today I've caught sets by the Wailin' Jennys, The Felice Brothers, and Gogol Bordello ... later the full set by the Decemberists. BTW, Portland music also well represented also by Sallie Ford and Typhoon (hopefully, their recorded sets will be up online later).

Saturday
Besides my pick show of the weekend, Blackie and The Rodeo Kings at the Alberta Rose Theatre, here's a few more ...

Spend an afternoon at the Overlook Village Street Fair in North Portland ... three stages of music that gets underway at 10 am ... North Killingsworth between Greeley and Concord.

If I wasn't going to be at the BARK show tonight, I think I'd catch King Louis and Sweet Baby James Benton at Jimmy Mak's.  Benton is a Portland musical legend with connections back to the thriving African American music community that existed in North Portland, operating The Backyard, a BBQ and performance venue that was the place for local and touring musicians alike to jam and eat.  Tonight's show celebrates that history with music and BBQ ... 8 pm, $10

Brandi Carlile will probably sell out the Oregon Zoo show tonight ... 7 pm, $26

Whistlepunk and Paula Sinclair will be at Press Club ... 8:30 pm, no cover

The Midnight Serenaders are at The Blue Monk ... 9 pm, $??

Devin Phillips is at Wilfs ... 8 pm, $??

Wendy & the Lost Boys ... and bellydancing ... at Vino Vixens ... 8 pm, $??

Choices, people, choices!
