Will be missing Portland music this weekend ... heading today to San Francisco for the 10th anniversary Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. It's a free music festival in Golden Gate Park with an amazing lineup ... and a good excuse for a short road trip. I'll post some thoughts on Portland Music tonight or Friday morning .... Let me know if you happen to be going too.
This blog will cover my ramblings about upcoming live music in and around Portland and recommendations for getting out to clubs and concerts . . . . and whatever else I feel like blathering about.

Quick picks for Thursday
Always good choices on Thursday ... here's a few to note:
In town tonight at the Alberta Rose Theatre is Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart ... this husband and wife team of troubadours will charm you with their music and warmth. Always engaging and entertaining, Stacey and Mark are playing a bigger room then usual in Portland (they were frequent guests at the old Mississippi Studios), but shouldn't loose any of the intimacy of a smaller venue. It's a night of great duos, as locals Adam & Kris will open .... 8:30 PM, $12
Should be a rockin' night at Duff's with The Knuckleheads ... Rumor has it that Curtis "Satellite Malone" Salgado will be joining John Mazzocco, Paris Slim, Jeff Meriweather, and a few other guests ... 9 PM, $??
Of course, you can start early with happy hour at the Laurelthirst with the always dependable Lewi Longmire and band .... 6 PM, no cover
Or get your jam on with the Garcia Birthday Band at the White Eagle ... 8:30 PM, no cover
.... or maybe Jimmy Mak's for the weekly soulful set by the Mel Brown B3 Organ Band ... 8 PM, $5

A special request
I don't generally make a special request like this to folks who read Jim's Music Notes, but I want to personally invite you to a show this coming Saturday at the Alberta Rose Theatre.
As many of you know, I have been one of the producers of the Gulfsongs Oregon series of shows (11 total) that have been held since the middle of July (and I realize some of you may be tired of hearing about it - I promise after this week I'll be much quieter for a while). This series was put together, with co-producer Stacy DeHart, as our response to the ongoing disaster of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico - and we wanted to do something that would focus on helping people who were affected.
So far Gulfsongs has raised over $5200 through these shows for two organizations - the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans & Acadiana and Gulf Aid Acadiana. The money is helping both to provide local assistance to people in coastal Louisiana who have been economically hurt. The contributions that go to Gulf Aid Acadiana help fund Bayou Grace Community Services, a community organization that is providing assistance in the Five Bayous area of Lower Terrebonne Parish. These are small communities along the coast that were hard hit by the spill, putting a lot of folks out of work. The economic effects have been rippling through communities that are still recovering from the effects hurricanes Katrina and Rita five years ago and the continued erosion of coastal wetlands. Even with the final capping and killing of the well, there is a lot of recovery to be done in the region - both economic and environmental. There is ongoing need in those affected communities that doesn't stop when the cameras and reporters leave. The oil spill is just the latest challenge to a vitally important area of this country that is disappearing before our eyes. Bringing attention to the people, culture, and environment is something we committed to doing with this project.
Gulfsongs Oregon shows have been held at Mississippi Studios, the White Eagle Saloon, the Laurelthirst, Duff's Garage, Biddy McGraw's, and the Trails End Saloon. Over 40 local artists or bands joined the effort to raise money through their performances. The final show in this initial series will be on Saturday, September 25th, at the Alberta Rose Theatre. It will will be a Celebration of Louisiana Music and includes Reggie Houston, Devin Phillips, Steve Kerin & Atomic Gumbo, the Too Loose Cajun/Zydeco Band, Turtle VanDemarr, Mac Potts, Paris Slim, and a number of other special musical guests. Tom D'Antoni of Oregon Music News and KMHD-FM will be the MC for the evening. Pianist, and Louisiana native, Steve Kerin is serving as music director for the show and has put together a program that will explore the various musical styles we associate with Louisiana and New Orleans. There will also be a silent auction of donated items from local artists, photographers, restaurants and service providers.
I am making a special request to all of you to come out to the show ... I guarantee this is going to be a ton of fun. And tell your friends too!
The Alberta Rose Theatre is at NE Alberta and 30th. The show starts at 8:30 PM and tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
I hope you can make it and I look forward to seeing you there!
Thanks .... - Jim

Keeping dry tonight ...
Be prepared if you're headed to the Willie Nelson show at Edgefield tonight ... probably will be fairly moist ...
For a dryer musical evening you might want to head over to the Secret Society Ballroom for what will be a regular third Saturday happy hour with the James Low Western Front .... James' latest band lineup is sounding great and this room is made for listening (a little different happy hour experience from the typical bar venue) ... check it out ... 6 PM, no cover
My featured show of this evening is the kickoff show of the PDX Jazz Festival's monthly series at Tony Starlight's with Devin Phillips. Devin and his band will be performing John Coltrane's A Love Supreme in its entirety ....
Couple of others to note:
If you stay at the Secret Society after James Low, you can catch the double bill of Paula Sinclair and the John Brown Project .... 9:30 PM, $??
It's Halfway to St Patrick' Day all afternoon at the Kennedy School ... music starts at 1 PM.
.... and there's a Local Music Showcase at the Alberta Rose Theatre .... 9 PM, $8
And speaking of the Alberta Rose and Devin Phillips .... Devin will be one of the featured performers at next Saturday's Gulfsongs benefit show at the theater .... it's a Celebration of Louisiana Music ... keep the show on your radar ...

Born and raised in New Orleans, Devin Phillips was an evacuee during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and became a part of the Portland Jazz Festival's "NOLA 2 PDX Project." Devin Phillips is now a permanent fixture on the local scene performing in a multitude of ensembles, including Portland Jazz Festival appearances with Branford Marsalis and Pharoah Sanders. For this special engagement, his homage to Coltrane recognizes his mentor's 84th birthday (September 23) and celebrates the birth of Phillips' newborn son. States Philips, "While we were at the hospital during the birthing process, I had A Love Supreme played repeatedly. John's music has and will always have a special place within my own music and family."This should be a fantastic show ... you can read and hear more about it at Oregon Music News ...8 PM, $15

Friday music picks
Yesterday I recommended the Les McCann/Javon Jackson show at Jimmy Mak's - 2nd of two shows is tonight ... 8 PM, $25 .... Good story about Les here at Oregon Music News.
For happy hour you might want to find your way over to the Secret Society Ballroom for Rob Stroup and the Blame ... 6 PM, no cover
My pick show for tonight is at Duff's Garage. Eilen Jewell has been compared to artists like Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch and has garnered a tremendous amount of critical acclaim with her first three CDs (Boundary County , Letters from Sinners and Strangers & Sea of Tears). She's touring in support of her latest recording, Butcher Holler - A Tribute to Loretta Lynn.

Jewell's music has the languorous quietude of (Gillian) Welch or Norah Jones, but there is something more direct, almost in your face, about her stark, neo traditional melodies, subdued vocals, and confident, slow-swaying groove. It's as if she's daring us to say we miss the bells and whistles of pop...Jewell’s songs are achingly good, twanged-out elegies to a world of barbed wire, rusty trucks, and a frontier that no longer exists. - Boston GlobeBut she also can rock out with the best. Eilen is someone I've wanted to check out for a while and highly recommend - should be a really fun show. Maybe see ya there! ... 9:30 PM, $10

Two other excellent shows of note tonight
Slaid Cleaves is in town tonight at the Alberta Street Pub ... intimate room with an outstanding singer/songwriter (I'd probably be here if it wasn't for the Gulfsongs show tonight) .... 7 PM, $20
I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you that the legendary Les McCann is playing two nights at Jimmy Mak's beginning tonight. He'll be playing with the Javon Jackson Band .... Here's a little sample of them from NPR... 8 PM, $25
And here's some classic Les (with Eddie Harris) from Montreux ...

Gulfsongs Oregon's 10th show tonight
Winding down or winding up? The next to last of this summer's scheduled Gulfsongs Oregon shows is tonight at the White Eagle and features some of my favorite Portland artists. It will be Ron Rogers & The Wailing Wind leading it off at 8:30 PM, followed by the Chris Miller Band, and finishing with Wendy and the Lost Boys. The suggested donation at the door is $6-$10.
I know I've pushed hard on getting folks out to these benefit shows, but indulge me, as I have co-produced the series. We produced these shows because we want folks in the NW to be aware that the people of the Gulf Coast - particularly along the coastal bayous of Louisiana - have been continually hit hard by disasters both natural and man-made - hurricanes, oil spills, and the rapid loss of essential wetlands due to poor management of the Mississippi River delta. What the people there face isn't a temporary problem.
The money raised by Gulfsongs goes to helping assisting families and communities economically hurt of the latest event - the oil spill - via two local community-based organizations. So far the nine completed shows have allowed us to send over $4000 to the Second Harvest Food Band of Greater New Orleans & Acadiana and to Bayou Grace Community Services via the Gulf Aid Acadiana Fund.
The final currently planned Gulfsongs Oregon show is scheduled for next Saturday, Sept 25th, and will be a celebration of Louisiana music at the Alberta Rose Theatre. Stay tuned for more on that one.

The big stuff this weekend
Musicfest NW revs into gear today and runs through Sunday ... lots of music ... tons of music- local and touring ... multiple genres .... multiple venues around town. Am I going to point out which shows you should check out? Not really. There's just too much .... but I will point you to some good resources to check out the artists, music, etc:
The schedule
Oregon Music News
Oregonian (Ryan White)
Willamette Week
More big stuff for the weekend:
You can also get out of town and head to the mountains ... to beautiful central Oregon and the Sisters Folk Festival ... starts Friday evening and runs through Sunday afternoon. Beautiful location, great acts, and multiple opportunities to see performances ... daily tickets run $35-65 or $95 for three-day pass.
Or head to the coast Saturday for the inaugural DME Big Easy Express, an afternoon musical train trip. There will be music in a park in Garibaldi before and after the trip, music and food on the train (even dancing) ... and a limited number of participants (about 100 or so). The music will focus on that of New Orleans and Louisiana with Reggie Houston, Steve Kerin, the Too Loose Cajun Band, Peter Dammann, Lady A, and Mac Potts. Should be quite a fun day at the coast ... Tickets are $118 and you still might be able to score one (though it is just about sold out) - probably best to call 503-292-5055 for reservations.
Also on Saturday, and closer to home, is the Muddy Boot Organic Festival with music on Saturday and Sunday from a host of great local artists including Casey Neill, Sallie Ford, Jackstraw, and The Dimes ... lots of vendors and exhibits too promoting the green and organic lifestyle ... $5 per day
On Sunday, there's a big Gulfsongs Oregon benefit blues show at the Trails End Saloon. Produced for Gulfsongs by the Cascade Blues Association, the show will feature the Robbie Laws Trio, Ellen Whyte and Dave Mulany, the Karen Lovely Band (with special guest Kevin Selfe), The Insomniacs, the David Samuel Project, the Ben Rice Band, and Eric Tweed with The Devil's Advocate and special guest David Brothers ... a seven hour event! Music starts at 1 PM, $10-20 suggested donation. Drop by and catch some tunes and support our neighbors on the Louisiana Gulf Coast who have been hurt by the BP oil disaster.
Those are just some of the choices for the weekend ... don't let it give you a headache trying to decide where to go!

DME Big Easy Express: Fun on a train
Just a quick heads up on something that's been on my radar...
The DME Big Easy Express next weekend (Saturday the 11th) is going to be one fun experience. Packed into six hours at the coast, folks will hear music in a park (twice), take a train ride in historic cars along the beautiful Oregon coast while being entertained by some of the Northwest's best blues, Cajun and Zydeco musicians - Reggie Houston, Turtle Vandermarr, Steve Kerin, Lady A, Peter Dammann, the Too Loose Cajun Band, Mac Potts - and there will even be a car for dancing! And lunch too ... Amanda Gresham's Delta Music Experience and RailsNW put this all together and you should check it out.
Trip leaves out of Garibaldi and you'll need to be there by 11 am.... There are a limited number of tickets left, so you might want to get one soon. Maybe see ya on the train!

Only post of the week!
I'm pretty sure this will be my only post this week - taking an extended Labor Day Weekend off from the blog (though I might occasionally post something on Facebook). And of course you can check any of the online music calendars like Concert Co-op, Willamette Week, McMenamins, etc (links in list to the right) ...
One show I'm going to direct you to is tomorrow night at Mississippi Studios. It's the seventh show in the Gulfsongs Oregon benefit series that I've helped produce this summer. This indie pop/rock show will kick off a busy September with Gulfsongs shows at Biddy McGraw's (Friday night), the Trails End Saloon on the 12th, the White Eagle on the 16th, and finishing the series with a Louisiana Music Celebration at the Alberta Rose on the 25th. The full show schedule is here.
Thursday's show at Mississippi Studios will feature sets by some of Portland’s best indie pop/rock artists: Chris Robley & The Fear of Heights, Rachel Taylor Brown, Leonard Mynx, and Buoy LaRue.
There will also be a presentation by the PDX 2 Gulf Coast team on their trip to the Gulf and what they learned about the effects of the oil spill on the people and the environment of the region. In addition there will be a silent auction that will raise additional funds to send to Bayou Grace Community Services (via the Gulf Aid Acadiana fund) and the Second Harvest Food Bank. A number of Portland artists will have work displayed in the auction including Chris Haberman, Jennifer Kenworth, Ron Rogers, Dan Dalton, and award-winning poster artist Gary Houston. There are also photos from music photographers Annaliese Moyer and Tim Deal, a ticket on the DME Big Easy Express, tee shirts and CDs from Music Millennium, brown pelican tiles from Pratt & Larson, and gift certificates from the Swamp Shack and Mississippi Studios.
Please come out to the show ... it starts at 8 PM and admission is a $10 donation ... great music and fun ... and we can help our neighbors in south Louisiana who can use a hand.
If you can, also come out to Biddy McGraw's on Friday night for a great lineup of songwriters led by Will West, and including Ezra Holbrook, Professor Gall, and Justin Blankenship .... 9 PM and no cover (artist fees and a portion of the bar will go to Gulfsongs)
Outside of the Gulfsongs show at Biddy's, a few things you might also check out Friday include James Low at the Laurelthirst (6 PM), David Vest at Duff's, Garage A Trois at the Doug Fir, a bluegrass show headlined by Jackstraw at the Alberta Rose Theatre, the Budos Band at Dante's, and Edward Sharp & the Magnetic Zeros at the Wonder Ballroom.
Besides those, you're on your own until next week- and it's a big one with MusicFest NW starting on Wednesday ... stay tuned.
Have a great weekend!
