Quickly for the weekend ...
Friday
Modern country isn't my thing, but there's two artist playing the big arena (Rose Garden) tonight that have generally moved through their careers with integrity and respect for a more classic sound and approach. So if you want to drop $80 or so bucks on a ticket, Reba McEntire and George Strait should be pretty entertaining ...7 pm
On the local scene ...

There a very cool blues house party that happens monthly in SE Portland. Tonight it hosts The Survivors (Jon Koonce, Denny Bixby, Albert Reda, and Lloyd Jones) According to Lloyd, they will be "playing crazy favorites from all over the map! With four vocalists and no adult supervision, there's no telling what can happen." So if you want to be there, call (503-784-6824) or email Jim Flynn ... music begins at 7 pm, $10 and BYOB. It's a party!
The Gretchen Mitchell Band will be at Blackbird Wines ... 8 pm, $12

Okay ... now head out to some live music!
This blog will cover my ramblings about upcoming live music in and around Portland and recommendations for getting out to clubs and concerts . . . . and whatever else I feel like blathering about.

Music for St Patrick's Day
So the weather's beautiful and you don't feel much like working. Hmmm .... dealing with crowds of revelers to grab a beer and listen to some great music doesn't sound so bad after all ....
Check these out ...
Kells finishes their five day run of celebrating with a pretty strong lineup of bands that leans towards the traditional ... music starts at 12:30 pm.
It's a blusy St. Pat's at Paddy's with Bill Rhoades, Paris Slim, Atomic Gumbo, the Strangetones, DK Stewart, and Patrick Lamb ... music starts at 2 pm.
Away from downtown, music begins at 4:30 at Edgefield ... and also at the Kennedy School beginning at 5:30, including the Freak Mountain Ramblers.
And of course at Biddy McGraw's there's a great lineup too, finishing with Casey Neill at 11:30 (plus it's a instrument drive for Ethos Music) ... music begins at noon.
And in a completely non-St. Pat's vein, the Aladdin hosts Maceo Parker. James Brown may have been the Godfather of Soul, but to be that he needed a killer live band. For years that band was led by sax player Parker. Look up "funk" and you'll find Maceo ... now this is a show to celebrate! ... 8 pm, $35
You can also celebrate in the cozy confines of your favorite pub, where you'll find Big Monti at the Trails End Saloon, Alice Stuart at the Laurelthirst, Suburban Slim at Duff's, Rick Welter at Queen of Hearts, and more ... check your favorite music schedule .... handy list is to the right .... >>

St Pat's music and more for the weekend
There's a slate of great music choices today ...
Now that St Patrick's has gone from being a single day to celebrate your Irish to almost a freakin' full week (so when did it become the Irish Mardi Gras?), there are excellent opportunities to hear a range of acts. There's music all day downtown at Kells' annual celebration, and every day through Wednesday (including a Mercy Corps benefit on Tuesday night with Curtis Salgado and the Crazy Eights). And, this afternoon and evening (and on Wednesday) there's music out at the Edgefield - it's free, and today features Casey Neill & The Norway Rats, the Seth Bernard & Daisy May Trio, Hobnail and Whistlin' Rufus ... music begins at 3:30 pm and it's a family-friendly event.
Speaking of St. Pat's, tonight at the Wonder Ballroom is your only chance til next year rolls around to see K.M.R.I.A., the Portland allstar Pogues tribute band. This is always rollicking fun you don't want to miss. State & Standard open ... 8 pm, $12
For you fans of east coast folk artists, two of the best - John Gorka and Patty Larkin - will be at the Aladdin tonight ... 8 pm, $25
Just spotted this, but John Sebastian will be out in Forest Grove at Pacific University as part of their performing arts series. More info here.
Stephanie Schneiderman and her band bring their melding of folk and electronica to Jimmy Mak's. The combination of Stephanie's vocals and guitar with Keith Schreiner's sonic settings make some very compelling music ... 8 pm, $10 (call for reservations if you want a table - 503-295-6542)
Good night to simply hang at the Laurelthirst, beginning with the Little Sue Band for happy hour at 6 pm, followed by Reggie Houston's Box of Chocolates featuring special guest Pete Krebs ... music will be swingin' ... 9:30 pm, $??
Rob Stroup and the Blame and The Redeemers are at Biddy McGraw's tonight ... 9:30 pm, no cover
Berthaline and the Cajun Love Brigade will make for happy feet over at the Spare Room (4830 NE 42nd). Brethren Thread opens what will be a funky, swampy evening .... 9 pm, $??
Blues choices? Check out The Strangetones at the Candlelight, Linda Hornbuckle at the Gemini Pub in Lake O, or Lauren Sheehan and Terry Robb at the Muddy Rudder.
That's probably plenty!

Joe Henry tonight at the Aladdin
I'll bet for most of you Joe Henry is an artist you don't know. But you should. Songwriter, singer, producer (a rather in-demand one at that over the last 15 years) ... critically acclaimed for just about everything he's done. Has produced some amazing recordings for others and on his own. Music that weaves elements of folk, country, blues, rock, and jazz in compelling and genre-bending ways, but unmistakably his.
If you can get over to the Aladdin tonight, it will be well worth the $20 ticket. Here's what friend and music writer Jim Desmond sent me this morning about the show last night in Seattle:
"A typically great Joe Henry performance. A stripped down trio, Dave Piltch on upright bass and the amazing Jay Bellerose on drums. Featured songs off each of Joe's last 6 records. A little bit more acoustic blues-folk sound than before. Joe's soulful singing justs gets even better and better with time, and maybe from producing so many great vocalists - Bettye LaVette, Solomon Burke, Harry Belafonte, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello, etc."
I'm unfortunately going to miss this one, needing to be in Seattle this evening (ah, timing in everything sometimes) .... but you shouldn't ... 8 pm, $20
