Got two for tonight that I highly recommend -
Bettye LaVette will be doing two shows at Jimmy Mak's (7:30 & 9:30). I've seen Bettye twice and guarantee she will knock you out. Great singer, outstanding performer . . .and this is a great opportunity to see her in a small club setting . . . $25 @ www.ticketswest.com and call the club if you want to make a table reservation.
And over at Mississippi Studios is the very fine singer/songwriter Tim Easton. . . 8 pm, $12
This blog will cover my ramblings about upcoming live music in and around Portland and recommendations for getting out to clubs and concerts . . . . and whatever else I feel like blathering about.

It's already Thursday . . .
Which means there's music afoot . . . and speaking of feet . . .
Not that you need a reminder of the regular Thursday treats, but for all you jammy, free-form dancin', rock & rollin' fans out there you can't go wrong at Lewi Longmire's Laurelthirst happy hour (6 pm), or the Garcia Birthday Band's monthly slot at the White Eagle (9:30 pm).
Like to dance to a more funky soulful beat, then get your groove on and head to Jimmy Mak's for Mel Brown's B3 Organ Group (8 pm, $5). Ooh baby.
Under the gazebo at Bridgeport Village this evening it's Curtis Salgado (6 pm, free). You can make it an evening of music . . . and shopping! (okay, you can eat, drink and dance too)
Up at the Chapel Pub, Steve Kerin puts the pipes and chimes of the pub's theater organ to a serious workout playing everything from Bohemian Rhapsody to Professor Longhair. (7:30 pm, free)
A fine blues/roots band, Moreland & Arbuckle, will be in town for a show at Duff's Garage. This looks sneaky good, so check 'em out . . . 9:30 pm, $??
And it's squeezebox mayhem at the Crystal Ballroom with the Monsters of Accordion . . . 8 pm, $12
More on weekend coming . . . couple of big ticket shows on Friday - Al Green at Edgefield and Diana Krall at the Schnitz . . . but some great local choices if you're not headed to one of those.

Don't miss this today!
Music on Main Street:
The Minus 5 w/The Baseball Project & The Steve Wynn IV
Besides being an amazing musician, Scott McCaughey is also a baseball fan - something that many of you know I am too. The Baseball Project (you can listen here) is the brainchild of Scott and Steve Wynn - 13 songs about players and events etched into our memories and the game as metaphor for the larger issues of life. And freakin' fun. Just go. And have a beer and a hot dog while you're at it.. . . 5 pm, free - downtown on Main Street at the Performing Arts Center.
See ya there!

A great b-day weekend
Hey all who came out for music and celebration . . .
Thanks for making this a very fun birthday weekend. Both Lloyd Jones' show on Friday or James Low's last night were that much better 'cuz I could share the night with my friends and fellow music lovers. I'm happy it worked out so well!
We should do that again . . . and I don't think we really need a reason like a b-day to do it!

Friday night lights . . . up
Hey all . . . a few quick picks for tonight . . .
At the top of my list is Lloyd Jones at Duff's Garage. Bluesy, soulful, funky and just plain fun . . . best way to get my b-day weekend rolling . . . come out and join me. . . 9 pm, $8
But if that don't float your boat . . .
The Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival kicks off at 4 pm (runs through Sunday night) with fine lineup of locals and headline acts that include War, Alan Toussaint, Judy Collins, Arturo Sandoval and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band . . . $20/day or $50/3-day pass
Susan Tedeschi and JJ Grey & Mofro are a solid double-bill at the Oregon Zoo. . . . 7 pm, $22
Rollie Tussing will be at the Mock Crest Tavern . . . 9 pm, $??
Might want to duck the flying instruments at the White Eagle when The Piano Throwers' take the stage . . . . 9:30 pm, $5
Looking for a happy hour show? Check out Michael Dean Damron & Thee Loyal Bastards at the Laurelthirst . . . 6 pm, free
Oh . . . and if you're looking for a hoot of an event tomorrow afternoon (that's not music) . . . it's the 2009 PDX Adult Soapbox Derby at Mt. Tabor Park from 10 am - 4 pm.
More coming on music for Saturday . . .

August keeps rollin' . . . rockin' too
Hurtling (lurching? chugging? stumbling?) forward into the unknown . . . . well, okay, we do know a little about the future - like some great music to check out over the next few days. Let's start with tonight.
The big show is out at Edgefield with The Flaming Lips and Built to Spill. One thing about seeing the Lips is you'll never be bored - damn creative staging that could include very large puppets, copious confetti, balloons, costumes (including on audience members), robots, front man Wayne Coyne traversing the crowd inside a bubble . . . which shouldn't distract you from some pretty adventurous music that the band has been making for well over 25 years. The Edgefield will definitely be a scene tonight. Prepare to be entertained . . . gates @ 5 pm, show @ 6, $43
Other shows tonight you might want to check out include:
The talented songstress and former Portlander, now Austinite, Raina Rose will be hanging round town for the next week or so and the first of her shows will be tonight at the Alberta Street Pub . . . 7 pm, $??
Speaking of Austinites, another fine songwriter and performer, Matt the Electrician will be at the Airplay Cafe. . . . 8pm, $10
Though known best for his production work and being essential sideman to folks like M Ward, Mike Coykendall has a killer band and a set of songs that will turn your head tonight at Mississippi Studios. Singer/songwriter Sonny Smith is also on the bill . . . 9 pm, $8
The fragile and beautiful 'chamber-folk' of Horse Feathers will fill the Doug Fir tonight. Sean Flynn and MBilly also on the bill. . . . 9 pm, $10

Uh oh - birthday dead ahead . . .
I am ambivalent about birthdays - at least mine. Part of me wants to acknowledge that one more trip around the sun, but the "celebrate me" part I don't wear quite so well. Why am I bringing this up? That day rolls around again at the end of the week and I've been trying to figure out how to reconcile this ridiculous conflict I'm having about it. (Really, I must have way too much time on my hands.)
So here's what I'm gonna do . . . .
I know some of you who read this are good friends, others don't really know me at all . . . but if any of you feel like it, join me for music on either Friday or Saturday night (or both). On Friday I'll be at Lloyd Jones' show at Duff's Garage and Saturday at James Low's at the Laurelthirst. Both start around 9:30 and I'll try to be there a little earlier. Can't think of a better way to celebrate than by getting as many folks as I can out to hear two musicians who are both good friends and two of the most talented artists in Portland. BTW, James is also marking his birthday with a reunion performance of his "old" band (with Lewi, Matt, Merilee, and Jolie) that should be a whole lot of fun.
But here's the twist (which is the point of all this) . . . Instead of buying me a birthday beer (besides, only two of you would get to do that anyway), write a small check to either the Oregon Food Bank, Mercy Corp, or Ethos Music Center and give it to me. I will deliver what I collect to each. Feeding people locally, helping those in crisis internationally, and teaching kids music are three things I care about. Never feel we can do enough for any of them. I'll collect cash too, but a check gives you a tax deductible contribution. Support the artists, support good work . . . and the less this is about me the better.
(BTW, if you just want to join me for the music, that's fine too - I know we all have our favorite causes and ways of giving.)
Hope to see you on Friday or Saturday night . . . .

Quick pick for Monday
If you're looking something for tonight, check out Duff's Garage for a roots music evening with Steve James and Eilen Jewell. Steve is a fine singer, picker and long time student of folk blues. Eilen is getting a lot of great notice for her blend of country, blues and early rock and roll, particularly for her new CD Sea of Tears.
Eilen Jewell's Sea of Tears has the feel of a breakout record. The Boston-by-way-of-Boise singer/songwriter already has built an avid following with three rootsy recordings teeming with songs that sound born of speakeasies and honky-tonks and train rides, all without—and this is the truly impressive part—a whiff of contrivance. (Independent Weekly - NC)
Maybe see ya there later . . . 9 PM, $10

Bike to music on Sunday
Get on your bike and ride around southeast to sample some great music all day . . .
It's the last of Portland's Sunday Parkways events for the summer and this week it's in Southeast with special activities in Mt Tabor, Col. Summers, Sunnyside and Laurelhurst Parks . . . from 9 am - 4 pm . . . and while your out riding . . .
It's also the Hawthorne Street Fair, with a couple of stages of music going all day. The 34th Ave stage will be electric and the 42nd Ave stage will be acoustic . . . music goes from 11 am to 5 pm with great acts on each.
. . . or ride over to Music Millennium for a 3 pm performance of Steve James - a very fine finger-picker, slide player and vocalist (who will also be at Duff's Garage on Monday night) . . . or cruise on over to the Doug Fir for another great Pickin' on Sunday . . .
Maybe see ya out and about!

Friday already
So what's up with tonight?
There'll be some great tunes (and food & drink) in Waterfront Park at The Bite of Oregon. It's open from 11-11 and there's music on two stages througout the day. And it's all local with some nicely creative programming - here's the schedule for the Garden Stage. This evening it's a fine American Roots lineup with sets by James Faretheewell, Garett Brennan, Lex Browning and Lewi Longmire and their bands. Check it out!
In addition to the two shows I mentioned yesterday - James Low's happy hour show at the Laurelthirst and the Don of Division Street CD release show at the Secret Society Ballroom (btw, excellent piece in today's A&E on this show by Barbara Mitchell if you want to know more) - here's a few other compelling choices for this evening:
Trio Subtonic celebrates the release of their new recording with a gig at Jimmy Mak's (story here). The all-women sax band, The Quadraphonnes, opens. Anticipate a great evening . . . 8 pm, $10
National Flower and The Dimes bring their solid tunefullness to Mississippi Studios tonight. The Woolwines, featuring the lovely voice and violin of Annalisa Tornfelt opens. Expect an evening of solid and sunny folk pop from this triple bill . . . 9 pm, $8
And over at Duff's Garage, the DK-4, featuring DK Stewart on keys, Peter Dammann on guitar and the Soul Survivor Horns, will be throwin' down a heavy dose of swinging blues and boogie. Time to dance . . . 9:30 pm, $8
With all these choices, you really gonna stay home?

Wake up Jim!
No, not sleeping . . . okay, maybe the heat last week temporarily rendered me slow (or slower than normal) . . . maybe it was staying up way past my bedtime at Pickathon last weekend . . . maybe I'm just makin' excuses . . .
It's Thursday, already after 4 and I really want to write a few things down about the upcoming weekend . . . maybe later. For now here's tonight and a couple to keep on the radar for tomorrow.
First . . . I did post earlier this week a reminder about the music going on this week and next every evening in Washington Park . . . starts at 6 pm and tonight it's The New Iberians - serving up some zydeo, cajun and big dose of fun. Understand Peter Dammann will be joining them tonight on guitar, too.
Always good happy hour shows around town - like Lewi Longmire at the Laurelthirst and Pete Krebs & the Portland Playboys at Duff's Garage.
Colin Lake and Wellbottom will be laying down some fine blues tonight at the White Eagle. 8:30 pm, free
For Friday I'll post a couple of more later or tomorrow, but keep in mind the monthly James Low happy hour at the Laurelthirst (6 pm, free) and you might want to follow that with the CD release show of the Don of Division Street at the Secret Society Ballroom (9 pm, $10)
And there's other good choices for the weekend, including a few choice musical happening at The Bite.

Washington Park Summer Festival
This week and next - every night in the Rose Garden amphitheater at Washington Park - some great free music and more. It's too bad this setting isn't used as much anymore for music, as it is one of the best outdoor venues in the city. But for two weeks every August it is, so get out for at least one or two. Because of funding issues this annual series almost didn't happen, so come out and support it.
