My picks for some upcoming shows . . . the budget edition!
Thursday
As usual, a great locals night - check out the shows (most of these are weekly gigs) of:
Lewi Longmire at the Laurelthirst . . . 6 PM, free (but feed the tip jar)
Lauren Sheehan at the Muddy Rudder . . . 8 PM, free (ditto on the jar!)
Pianist Ben Darwish commands the theater organ at The Chapel Pub . . . 7:30 PM, free
The Thad Beckman Trio is at O'Connors (7850 SW Capitol Hwy) . . . . 6:30 PM, $5
The Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group will be at Jimmy Mak's . . . 8 PM, $5
. . . and for something a little later in the evening for a jump start to your weekend . . . the Garcia Birthday Band is at the White Eagle. These veteran jammers have been evolving from a loose, occasional event-centered group into a consistently performing band. Check 'em out in their monthly WE gig . . . 9:30 PM, free
Friday
Lisa & Her Kin do their monthly Friday happy hour gig at the Laurelthirst . . . 6 PM, free
Miss Michael Jodell and Matt Brown will be tuneful at the Press Club . . . 8:30, free
Speaking of tuneful, Rebecca Kilgore, accompanied by pianist Tom Grant, will perform at Rafati's Encore . . . 7:30 PM, free
Kris Delmhorst and Jeffrey Foulcault are performing two shows at the Alberta Street Pub. The early one is sold out and tickets going fast for the late show. Highly recommended! . . . 7 & 9:30 PM, $15
Finally, the big news for next week is the official re-opening of Mississippi Studios! Excellent article about the renovation and reinventing of the venue at the Portland Mercury.
Maybe a few more thoughts coming for Saturday and Sunday . . . but catch some shows and do your part for the economy by supporting your local musicians! See ya at a show!
This blog will cover my ramblings about upcoming live music in and around Portland and recommendations for getting out to clubs and concerts . . . . and whatever else I feel like blathering about.

Kudos to Portland Jazz Festival
Went to a couple of festival shows over the weekend - Rebecca Kilgore & Dave Frishberg at the PSC's Art Bar (actually a nice sounding space for a concert), Kate Davis at Wilf's, and the Pat Martino show at the Crystal Ballroom. All were wonderful. Based on these shows and feedback from others, the festival organizers should feel proud of a job well done. Given economic times and the plethora of choices, I hope the numbers were strong (were at the shows I attended) and it bodes well for the continuation of this great event which was almost canceled due to funding problems.
BTW, I was really impressed by the 18 year old Davis - a local singer and bass player with voice and chops that are hard to reconcile with her age . . . I was absolutely stunned. If you get a chance to see her, do so . . . . Here's a little bit of Kate . . . .

Show recommendations Wed thru Friday
So much going on I'll just look at the next couple of days first . . .
Tonight Todd Snider will bring his topical and funny act to the Aladdin. A native son (Beaverton) now in Nashville, Todd is always entertaining - particularly back on his home turf. . . 8 PM, $22
For some really fine jazz vocals (in a really amazing week for jazz around town), check out Nancy King in her weekly gig at The Cave . . . 8 PM, $5
And check the full schedule of the Portland Jazz Festival for shows through the weekend all around town - try to get to at least one to support this excellent event.
Thursday
Another fine show at the Aladdin with the Blind Boys of Alabama and Judith Owen . . . 8 PM, $35
Rob Barteletti's Songwriter's Showcase - this week featuring Lisa Mann, Dan Weber and Hal Gerard - is at the White Eagle. Opening the evening for happy hour is Paula Sinclair & the Contenders. 5:30/8:30 PM, free
Kolvane & Kerin will be at Duff's Garage. Dan and Steve as a duo are my preferred way of hearing them - a little quieter and lots of room to get more creative and range wider than with the full band. 9 PM, $5
Friday
James Low plays a second February Friday happy hour at the Laurelthirst. James played to a packed house two weeks ago . . . should be more of the same this week, so come out and get your weekend started right. See you there. 6 PM, free
The Ben Darwish Trio are doing a CD release show at Jimmy Mak's. Ben is an excellent young jazz pianist and the trio really swings. . . . 8 PM, $10
The Portland Folk Music Society will host Carolyn Cruso, Doug Smith and Dick Weissman in a mostly instrumental show. . . . 7:30 PM, $12
The Midnight Serenaders are at Tony Starlight's Supper Club. . . 8 PM, $7
Out on the westside, The Atonements will be rockin' the Rock Creek Tavern with their brand of roots music and psychedelic Americana. . . 9 PM, free
Atomic Gumbo, a project of keyboard player Steve Kerin (and including Kolvane on guitar - busy guys this week) will bring their tasty mix of Louisiana sounds to the White Eagle along with the Bridgetown Saints. 9:30 PM, $6

Austin report 2
What a fabulous weekend in Austin . . .
Marcia Ball's b-day event was even better than I expected - between the music, hanging with old friends, and just being in one of my favorite music cities - it was very satisfying fun. The music was outstanding, beginning with zydeco and Cajun music on Friday night through an amazing "pianorama" on Sunday afternoon . . . and including a completely over the top performance by the "divas" on Saturday night. Highlights for me included the ageless Lavelle White belting out down and dirty blues - sounding and shaking better than most folks half her age (she's pushing 80!); Marcia harmonizing with Tracy Nelson, Angela Strehli and Lou Ann Barton on songs from the collaborations she did with those artists in years past (and who I never thought I'd hear sing together); a pianorama that ended with the hands of nine players on five keyboards pounding out a storm of notes that had the audience out of their chairs; hearing one of the best boogie woogie players you've never heard of - Bob Seeley - wowed the audience when Marcia invited him up to play; and Delbert McClinton and Teresa James belting out a duet backed by a combination of players from his band and Marcia's and joined by the Mingo Fishtrap horns.
Saw a lot of old friends from Delbert's cruise - was wonderful how many folks came into town to celebrate with Marcia. Having not gone on the cruise this year, it felt like one with the concentration of music and friends. Made a few new connections too . . . and may have sold a few on coming to Portland for the Waterfront Blues Festival.
And what Marcia was able to do in three days to raise money for two great organizations was also a testament to the person she is - over $125K from ticket sales, auction items, and additional contributions. Just an amazing weekend . . . now that's the way to have a birthday! Will post some photos soon.

La Ti Da . . . report from Austin
Big fun last night at Antone's at the first night of Marcia Ball's big birthday bash. The house was rocking in a particularly Louisiana way with Gino Delafose, Steve Riley and Sonny Landreth. Marcia sat in with Steve and his band morphed into Little Band of Gold with the addition of CC Adcock and Dave Ranson. Delafose and Riley had much of the crowd dancing, Sonny had jaws dropping with his distinctive slide work. The silent and live auction brought in more money for HAMM and Sweet Home New Orleans, the two organizations Marcia is raising money for.
It's wonderful to be in Austin with Flaire and so many of our cruise friends . . . and being part of Marcia's celebration. After getting up at 4 am, I was pretty beat by time Sonny got going, so we left before the end of the set, but I'll be ready for tonight's show with Marcia and a host of amazing women - Maria Muldaur, Angela Strehli, Lavelle White, Lou Ann Barton, Tracy Nelson and Sarah Brown . . .and maybe a few unannounced guests. And then more music and an after-party tomorrow afternoon.
Will try to post some photos later or tomorrow . . . or not . . . . Have a great Portland music weekend.

Even one more for Friday!
Check out this band up from San Diego playing at the East End . . . recommendation came from Peter Dammann, one of Portland's best guitar players and they guy who books all the great acts for the Waterfront Blues Festival (this means when he talks, I listen) . . .
"One interesting act you missed mentioning: Friday night at the East End: Lady Dottie and the Diamonds, a punkish/bluesy version of Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings --- i.e. middle aged black diva belter out front, backed by a young white band that in this case comes from punk and alt-rock roots, playing a revisionist history of delta and Chicago blues."
I am definitely diggin' their tunes . . . . What a weekend of music . . . impossible not to find something that moves ya!

One more for Friday
Add this to your Friday choices . . .
Paula Sinclair, Kate Mann and Chris Kokesh - three very fine Portland singer/songwriters - will perform an evening of sad love songs at the Airplay Cafe. 7 PM, $10

Before I'm outa here . . .
Busy weekend coming with some great choices . . . .
As I've already mentioned check out the schedule for the Portland Jazz Festival . . . great music beginning this weekend and continuing through next. If you don't mind loosing a little sleep I recommend heading to The Cave for the late night jams. I'd also check out some of the smaller venues for shows that are part of the festival. This is a world class event that almost didn't happen this year . . . so get out and support it.
Other musical treats include . . .

Fernando is doing a recording release party at Dante's to celebrate True Instigator . . . a recording he's only making available online and for free. Download it here and check out the show. I've been enjoying the new tracks and the show should be excellent. 9:30 PM, $7

Whether you chose to watch it or not, I think this is a great blog post by Bruce with his reflections about the Super Bowl performance. Definitely worth a read.

Couple of things
Via Luciana Lopez's blog . . . the Portland Jazz Festival (which begins next weekend) is selling 2 for 1 tickets for some shows . . . info about the ticket deal here. BTW, the festival lineup is excellent and you should really try to catch a show.
If you're up for music tonight, check out The Gourds at the Doug Fir. This very fine Austin band combines diverse influences - think of a music axis that runs from the Southwest through Texas and on to New Orleans and you'll get the idea. 9 PM, $15
And, speaking of Austin, I'll be headed there on Friday for a few days. Will be helping Marcia Ball celebrate her 60th birthday, which she'll do in fine fashion with three days of shows at Antone's. Big fun in Texas and I feel really lucky to be able to attend. Might blog about it, might not . . . we'll see. I'll try to get out weekend recommendations before I leave.
One more . . . get your tickets for Dave Alvin with special guest Steve Berlin (of Los Lobos) at the "pre-opening" show at Mississippi Studios on Saturday night. This is going to be a great performance space - you should be part of the very first show. 9 PM, $20 in advance

For those of us in Sellwood/Westmoreland, Lloyd Jones will be playing a solo gig Saturday in the 'hood at the Muddy Rudder. 8 PM, free . . . but feed the tip jar!

Busy weekend . . . .
A little later than I anticipate, but I got busy helping out at Mississippi Studios, then had to spend time on the employment search (yeah, easy to get distracted from that one) and then I had to . . . okay, okay . . . no excuses! Here's my thoughts on the weekend . . . .
Friday
A stellar night at the Laurelthirst begins with the James Low Band for a happy hour show (6 PM, free) and continues with a double bill of Baby Gramps and the down-home acoustic blues of Alvin Youngblood Hart. It's a very special show when the 'Thirst gets a touring artist like Hart. 9:30 PM, $15
With a founding member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers and one of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, you have a great evening of music at the Aladdin, with Chris Hillman, Herb Pederson and John McEuen . . . these are some of the guys who defined country rock and spawned a slew of well loved bands. 8 PM, $27
Fruit Bats are at the Mission Theater. (7 PM, $12)
Around the local scene, the DK4 are at Duff's Garage (9:30 PM, $ 5); Lewi Longmire is at Biddy McGraws (9:30 PM); the Renegade Minstrals are at the Airplay Cafe (7 PM); and Melao de Cuba is at Mississippi Pizza (9 PM).
Saturday
The Little Sue Band holds down the happy hour slot at the Laurelthirst. Hearing Sue is always a good start to a musical evening. 6 PM, free
Winterfolk XXI, the annual fundraiser for the Sisters of the Road Cafe, is at the Aladdin and will honor the late Utah Phillips with a great lineup of both touring and local artists. 8 PM, $30
The Dimes and Casey Neill & the Norway Rats are part of a four band bill at Holocene. Big bang for the buck. 8 PM, $6
The Insomniacs will rock out at Duffs. 9:30 PM, $6
Enough for now . . . . see you at a show!
