No white elephants!

It's the frenzy of holiday prep, family gatherings, and all sorts of merriment and such ... but musicians gotta play music, so don't forget to make a little time to see and hear your favorites ... and ideal for slowing down the busyness of the holidays.

BTW, as a gift giving idea why not give a night out to hear any of Portland's wonderful musical artists - and it certainly beats another sweater. This could be especially nice for those who don't get out enough to hear live music. I know there are venues in town that do gift certificates too ...

Quick picks for tonight include ...

Amelia will be at the Press Club ... nice to see the band playing gigs again and hopefully indicative of more to come. We've missed them ... 8:30 pm, no cover

Over at the Eagles Club (SE 49th & Hawthorne) is the Too Loose Cajun Band with some very special guests for a Last Chance Christmas Dance. This will be the first time two of Louisiana's finest musicians residing in Portland (Reggie Houston & Steve Kerin) have played together. Paul Brainard is in the mix too ... gonna be a hot night of cajun, zydeco and Louisiana style fun ...'zat you Santa? ... 8 pm, $10

The Bridgetown Sextet will be at Duff's Garage. This excellent jazz group " ...performs authentic, energetic roots jazz from the 1920s, '30s and '40s, with a sound evoking Creole New Orleans, the stomp of prohibition-era Chicago, fast-paced Harlem stride piano, and the tight swing of depression-era Manhattan." Sounds good to me! ... 8:30 pm, $7

The Freak Mountain Ramblers will have the Laurelthirst packed for a late show ... 9:30 pm, $??

If you head out to Edgefield this weekend (tonight through Sunday), there will be holiday festivities including carolers strolling the grounds and Mary Flower with Jesse Withers doing some Christmas Blues . . . 7 pm, free

Maybe more tomorrow for Saturday and Sunday . . .
