August keeps rollin' . . . rockin' too

Hurtling (lurching? chugging? stumbling?) forward into the unknown . . . . well, okay, we do know a little about the future - like some great music to check out over the next few days. Let's start with tonight.

The big show is out at Edgefield with The Flaming Lips and Built to Spill. One thing about seeing the Lips is you'll never be bored - damn creative staging that could include very large puppets, copious confetti, balloons, costumes (including on audience members), robots, front man Wayne Coyne traversing the crowd inside a bubble . . . which shouldn't distract you from some pretty adventurous music that the band has been making for well over 25 years. The Edgefield will definitely be a scene tonight. Prepare to be entertained . . . gates @ 5 pm, show @ 6, $43

Other shows tonight you might want to check out include:

The talented songstress and former Portlander, now Austinite, Raina Rose will be hanging round town for the next week or so and the first of her shows will be tonight at the Alberta Street Pub . . . 7 pm, $??

Speaking of Austinites, another fine songwriter and performer, Matt the Electrician will be at the Airplay Cafe. . . . 8pm, $10

Though known best for his production work and being essential sideman to folks like M Ward, Mike Coykendall has a killer band and a set of songs that will turn your head tonight at Mississippi Studios. Singer/songwriter Sonny Smith is also on the bill . . . 9 pm, $8

The fragile and beautiful 'chamber-folk' of Horse Feathers will fill the Doug Fir tonight. Sean Flynn and MBilly also on the bill. . . . 9 pm, $10
