Busy weekend . . . .

A little later than I anticipate, but I got busy helping out at Mississippi Studios, then had to spend time on the employment search (yeah, easy to get distracted from that one) and then I had to . . . okay, okay . . . no excuses! Here's my thoughts on the weekend . . . .

Friday
A stellar night at the Laurelthirst begins with the James Low Band for a happy hour show (6 PM, free) and continues with a double bill of Baby Gramps and the down-home acoustic blues of Alvin Youngblood Hart. It's a very special show when the 'Thirst gets a touring artist like Hart. 9:30 PM, $15

With a founding member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers and one of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, you have a great evening of music at the Aladdin, with Chris Hillman, Herb Pederson and John McEuen . . . these are some of the guys who defined country rock and spawned a slew of well loved bands. 8 PM, $27

Fruit Bats
are at the Mission Theater. (7 PM, $12)

Around the local scene, the DK4 are at Duff's Garage (9:30 PM, $ 5); Lewi Longmire is at Biddy McGraws (9:30 PM); the Renegade Minstrals are at the Airplay Cafe (7 PM); and Melao de Cuba is at Mississippi Pizza (9 PM).

Saturday
The Little Sue Band holds down the happy hour slot at the Laurelthirst. Hearing Sue is always a good start to a musical evening. 6 PM, free

Winterfolk XXI, the annual fundraiser for the Sisters of the Road Cafe, is at the Aladdin and will honor the late Utah Phillips with a great lineup of both touring and local artists. 8 PM, $30

The Dimes and Casey Neill & the Norway Rats are part of a four band bill at Holocene. Big bang for the buck. 8 PM, $6

The Insomniacs will rock out at Duffs. 9:30 PM, $6

Enough for now . . . . see you at a show!
